Brother James Gaffney, F.S.C., was the President of Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois, from 1988 until his retirement in 2016. This 28- year period is the longest tenure ever of any President at any Lasallian Christian Brothers college or university in the United States. Guided by the Mission of the Lasallian Christian Brothers and supported by an outstanding group of men and women, Lewis University has become one of the top Catholic universities in the Midwest. When Brother James first became associated with Lewis in the mid-1970s, the University was struggling in many ways. From that shaky foundation, some have said that what Lewis has become is a miracle. This is the story of what happened to transform Lewis University and how Brother James Gaffney led the way.

  • The book resonated with me very much. I attended a Lasallian Christian Brothers high school in Detroit. While I had a general understanding of the education mission, I found the deeper information here added color to my own experience.

Brother James is certainly a fascinating leader and role model. Even your listing of his personal interests was insightful. I have never experienced someone that would list prayer, meditation and reflection as a personal interest (more often someone states it as “their practice”). It is also telling about someone that states building a friend and relationship network as a personal interest too. How human, and essential for a quality life.

In all, it is clear in the text this was a labor of love for you. I admire the manner in which you integrated the Lewis University information and story with the biographical aspects of Brother James.

Very readable all the way though.

  • I read your wonderful first book last evening non-stop and will certainly read it again as well as order copies for others, including my son and daughter who are both graduates and enjoy an ongoing friendship with Brother James. Your work brought back so many wonderful memories and connections during my years at Lewis initially with Brother David, Brother Eugene and Wayne Draudt and then the many years of engagement in a variety of ways, including the years my wife, Nancy, served initially as the administrative assistant to Rob DeRose and then as payroll manager for the university.

Brother’s childhood and family experience was particularly interesting and insightful in shaping the person he became. Very glad you included this aspect of his life as it served as the basis for his belief in the mission and purpose of his life. The connection and influence of Brother Paul French as well as Brother Neil and Brother Konrad with Brother James spoke volumes to the welcoming spirit, joy and support that is so evident throughout the Christian Brothers.

You beautifully captured the transformation of Lewis from the depths of its darkest days to a time when Brother David sowed the seeds of hope and calm among the faculty and staff. Although still a very challenging time, hope and renewed cautious optimism changed the conversation on campus and helped set the stage for the “miracle” that Brother James would so brilliantly lead.

As I turned each page I could not help but feel a sense of gratitude for the “blessing” of Lewis in my life and that of my family. So many stories and wonderful friendships over the years and such a sense of pride to have been a small piece of the puzzle that become the portrait of America’s leading Christian Brothers University.

So, thank you again. I can only imagine the hours of your life you dedicated to creating the exceptional and important work for Brother James, for all who have been touched by him and for the legacy of Lewis University to live on for generations yet to be born.
