One of the most difficult things about creating “Records Truly Is My Middle Name (the soundtrack)” was cutting down material from a 40-plus year radio career into one CD. John had to make some difficult choices about bits, songs, and interviews that didn’t make the final cut.
John wrote extensively in the book about his work with the Legends, the band that backed him up and toured with him throughout his time at WJMK (Oldies 104.3). He also explained how he hooked up with them originally. That goes all the way back to the late 70s/early 80s when he was at WLS AM. He used to hang out with a band called “The Kind”, and they would ask him to come on stage and sing the song “Gloria”.
But they also went into the studio one time to record this song with John. It’s a parody of an AC/DC song, and it’s about Mayor Jane Byrne’s much-criticized publicity-stunt to move into Cabrini Green housing project to show how safe it was. The original recording, “Cabrini Green”, is below…
