With the Winter Olympics about to kick off in Sochi, the 20th anniversary of the Nancy Kerrigan-Tonya Harding news story is being discussed and written about all over the place, including this piece in Slate Magazine.

kerrigan pinataJohn Landecker was the morning man at WJMK at the time, and fronted the band Landecker & the Legends. They wrote and performed not just one, but two songs featuring this unbelievable story about one female figure skater plotting to kneecap another figure skater. One song was written before the Olympics, and the other one was written after the Olympics in Lillehammer.

Those songs became a big part of the band’s stage show. At one concert in Mt. Prospect, the band even had a giant paper mache skater-leg pinata (photo) filled with gold medal-shaped chocolates.

Here are the songs, “Breaking Knees” and “Broken Laces”

Those two songs didn’t make it on the CD, but lots of memorable interviews, bits, and songs of Landecker’s career did. You can see the track list below…

“Records Truly Is My Middle Name (The Soundtrack)” is available right here at Eckhartz Press. It’s being sold as a fundraiser for The Chicago Lighthouse, which does great work for visually impaired and blind people. John’s father was blind, so it’s a charity he deeply believes in and supports.

And by the way, the CD is a perfect gift for the Landecker fan in your family, and it’s only $11.99.
