Almost 40 years have passed since the Super Bears shuffled into American consciousness and hoisted the trophy. Why? From Ditka to Eberflus, Walter to Caleb, I Bear Witness is your locker room pass to four decades of triumph, travail and tragedy. Through the eyes of insider Dan McNeil, a Chicago sports radio titan, I Bear Witness tells all on Team McCaskey’s devolution to the NFL’s most dysfunctional franchise.
Who is Dan McNeil?
Dan McNeil is a Chicago sports radio legend, podcaster and writer. Known best for his fast paced, no holds barred approach, McNeil became a Chicago brand in his early 30s at Chicago’s first all sports talk format, the Score.
The son of a manufacturing warehouse foreman, McNeil grew up in Highland, Indiana, about 25 miles south of Comiskey Park. Though his first love was baseball, McNeil contends he “found his way” through the weight room and success as a high school football player. At 8, he began writing about sports on a manual, dated Smith-Corona. His hero was Oscar Madison, the beer-swilling, disheveled sportswriter played by Jack Klugman on The Odd Couple.
In addition to his his highly successful sports-talk radio runs at the Score and ESPN in Chicago, McNeil’s credits include: Chicago Tribune, weekly guest columnist ’09-’13. Chicago Sun-Times, weekly columnist ’07-’09. The Hammond Times, weekly guest columnist ’05-’07. WXRT 93.1 FM, “Athletes Feats” commentary ’95-’99. The Loop, AM 1000, executive producer/weekend host ’88-’91. WGN 720-AM, intern producer ’85-’86.
The father of three sons, McNeil’s is an autism advocate and has chaired a dozen celebrity golf outings to raise money and awareness. His middle son, Patrick, 31, is severely autistic. Van, 34, is Mac’s “fishing soulmate” while Jack, 29, shares his passion for classic rock. “My drummer son,” says McNeil, who took Jack to see AC/DC in the second row for his first concert experience.
Danny Mac and his wife, Sheri, reside in Northwest Indiana.
