What kind of books are we looking to publish at Eckhartz Press? We are a Chicago press, so we prefer to focus on Chicago authors or stories about Chicago, but we are open to other books if we see the sales potential. The dream Eckhartz Press author is someone who does regular speaking engagements or events that will provide ample opportunities to sell the book. Someone who is at ease handling the media is also an ideal candidate. We prefer non-fiction because fiction is so difficult to sell, but we will consider fiction submissions as well, particularly if the subject matter is unique or newsworthy. Finally, we are very author-centric, so we aim to help authors in any way we can. See the services we can provide in section 4 below. Each of these are available on an ala-carte basis to non-Eckhartz Press authors as well.
NON-FICTION SUBMISSION
If you are submitting a work of non-fiction for consideration, please send a synopsis, an author bio, a table of contents, and the first chapter of your work via e-mail to rick@eckhartzpress.com. If this initial inquiry interests Rick, he will request the full manuscript.
When you submit the full manuscript…
- It should be double-spaced and sized in 11 or 12 pt. characters. The font doesn’t matter, but please do NOT submit in a difficult to read font.
- Do not send your first draft. We expect that you have gone through your manuscript at least three times. If your word count is well over 100,000 words, you may need to go through the manuscript again. That’s a very long book.
NON-FICTION PROPOSAL
If you are submitting a proposal for a book of non-fiction, meaning you only have an idea and haven’t written it yet, a simple e-mail to rick@eckhartzpress.com will suffice. If the proposal is outstanding, Rick may consider it and help guide you in the process. Keep in mind that this is not our preferred method of choosing books for publication. We prefer dealing with non-fiction authors who have already completed their work.
FICTION SUBMISSION
If you are submitting a work of fiction for consideration, please send a synopsis, an author bio, the first chapter of your work, and a brief summary of who you think the audience is for your work to rick@eckhartzpress.com. If this interests Rick, he will request the full manuscript.

FAQ’S
Do you accept unsolicited manuscripts?
Yes, we welcome unsolicited manuscripts.
How long does it take to review a submission?
We review all submissions and send the author a yes or no email within 60 days. Please keep in mind that we get dozens of inquiries monthly.
What if I don’t have an agent?
That’s fine! In fact, we prefer it. The vast majority of our submissions are from authors, not agents.
Do you charge a fee?
Yes. We are a hybrid publisher meaning that we share the pre-production costs with the author.
How are royalties computed?
We split all profits 50/50 with the author. Depending on production costs, authors can earn up to $7.50/per book which is 4-6x the amount traditional publishers pay.
